We're back...
This would also be a good time to announce that our production group (The Underclassmen) have been officially working with a local rapper named J.O. (www.myspace.com/createfreshmusic). Watch out for his new album and mixtape with production by us coming soon.

Jay-Z vs. The Game ?
Say what you want about that track, but I think The Game shoulda listened to Jay-z destroying Nas on Supa Ugly, and thought twice. I especially like the line from it where Jay-z talks about sleeping w/ Nas' girl - "u was kissin my dick when u was kissin that bitch". JIGGA IS MEAN! The Game better watch out.. he's poking the bear with this whole thing.

MJ Tribute: Better On The Other Side (SINGLE + VIDEO)
This song surfaced less than 24 hours after the announcement of Michael Jackson's passing and features The Game, Nas, Chris Brown, Usher, Diddy, Boyz II Men, Polow Da Don and Mario Winans. On a first listen, this song is incredibly powerful...it'll definitely be on my playlist for the next while.
The song can be downloaded here.
RIP MJ.

New video for the lead single off Mr Hudson's upcoming album. Pretty solid visuals for an inspired track. For those of you that don't know, Mr Hudson is a UK artist signed to Kanye's G.O.O.D. Music label. He also helped to write most of the songs for 808s and Heartbreak with Kanye.

Trey Songz - D.O.A. Kellz

Here's a Trey Songz cover of Jay-Z's new D.O.A. track. Sounds like Trey Songs is callin out R Kelly on this one... Personally I think it's stupid when new artists throw shots at legends in the game, but in this case Trey Songz insists that he is not trying start any beef with R Kelly. He says he's just criticizing Kellz for using autotune when everyone knows he can sing... which I agree with.

ORIGINAL SUNDAYS #2
Whatup Y'all, I know it's been a few weeks since I posted the first original sunday, but my computer crashed the week after so I had to put the posts on hold until I got my computer set up again.
For those of you who don't know what this is and aren't familiar with the concept of sampling, almost any current song you've listened to has probably been sampled from an older track. I have started collecting some of these original samples and every week I will be choosing a handful of my favorites and posting them up for everyone to download.

Original Sundays #1
People have different views about sampling, some people think it's stealing and insist that artists should be original and come up with their own music, while others such as myself find nothing wrong with it as long as the original artist is given due credit. I think sampling is an important part of the creative process and it's a way of keeping the music of the past alive... when I think about it, if modern hip hop producers hadn't sampled all these old musical gems, I probably would have never heard of them. Personally I find it sad nowadays when I see how the radio and TV have made music so brainless that most teenagers you talk to probably won't know what a sample or a producer is and probably think that Britney Spears writes her own music.
So with that being said, here's the first installment of Original Sundays:
Sampled by: Snoop & Dre - Nothin but a G thang
Sampled by: MIA - Paper planes
Sampled by: Warren G - Regulate
Sampled by: Nas - Street dreams
Sampled by: Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz - Deja vu (uptown baby)

The Bloody Beetroots ft. Steve Aoki - Warp 1.9
The Bloody Beetroots feat. Steve Aoki - Warp from Francesco Calabrese
I had the pleasure of seeing Steve Aoki live a few months ago when he came to Vancouver. I went into the show with no big expectations as the videos of him on youtube weren't too exciting, and I wasn't a big fan of the music. Needless to say, I got to the show and was absolutely blown away... never in my life have I seen a DJ with so much energy.
Here is a new video from the Bloody Beetroots a producer duo signed to Aoki's Dim Mak label.

Rant #3: Britney, bitch
Britney Spears "performed" (ie-lip-synched) last night in Vancouver. However, part-way through the show, she left the stage and didn't return for over half an hour, leaving the audience to wonder WTF was going on. About 20 min into the "break", a spokesperson announced:
“The building is awfully smoky. It is uncomfortable for everyone on stage, including Ms. Spears. Please extinguish all cigarettes – this is a non-smoking building, and the show will resume when the smoke on the stage is cleared.”
Strange...since the show opened up with a high-production intro involving smoke effects...
After another 20 min or so, Britney did return to "perform" some more songs. At the end of the concert, she did address the audience, or what was left of the audience:
“Drive safe, don’t smoke weed and rock out with your cock out. Peace mother fuckers.”
No one really knows what happened during that 40 min lapse. Some theories include Britney diva-ing out about something stupid, snorting cocaine or hooking up with K-Fed backstage. Many people left during that time and overall, the impression is that the audience was disappointed by the whole performance.
Now, I'm by no means a Britney fan. I support her in no way whatsoever and believe she has next to no talent. I definitely didn't even consider going to her "concert" but from what I've heard so far, this most recent performance only backs up my beliefs about her.
Britney most def didn't deliver what her fans wanted. Yes, we all know that she lip-synchs, but in the past at least she was part of a dazzling spectacle of choreography and lights to sorta make up for it. Rumor has it she barely even danced...
Next, you can't just alienate your audience like that by stopping the show. Whatever happened to professionalism? Or the age-old motto, "the show must go on"? If the smoke really was that bad, then grow a pair and tell the audience to stop yourself...if that was even the problem to begin with...
If she did actually just diva out during the concert, that's even worse. Of all people, she has no right to diva out about anything...seeing as how she's made millions of dollars singing songs that she didn't write or produce with her minimal vocal ability. At least in the past, she was essentially a hot, overpaid dancer. Now she's just plain overpaid. You can't pull that diva shit and expect people to just brush it off. These people paid a lot of money to see you "dance and sing", even if it's wack anyways.
Henceforth, I will be referring to Britney Spears as, more appropriately, Britney Bitch.
I hope that this performance is just another nail in the coffin for Britney Bitch's music career.

Eminem - Don't Approach Me
Btw... what was the big deal with 2001 anyways? Chronic 2001... Restless 2001... Eminem dropped 2001 a few times on his MM LP.. did anything exceptionally weird happen in 2001....... September 11th... damn.. it was Aftermath that did it!
However, some people said the 2001 drops were alluding the year Tupac was to come back... (the 7 day.. year.. theory) but we all know that didn't happen. Anyways.. Enjoy.

Just Blaze vs Total Kaos (who?)
Some southern producer named Total Kaos claimed that Just Blaze and T-Pain jacked his beat for a song called "Sky's the Limit" for the Maino song "All the Above". Just basically goes through his entire process for making this hot song and explains how he didn't jack shit from nobody. Pretty cool to see how a track comes together in JB's studio.
Anyways, I'm behind by dude Just Blaze on this one. A ton of songs sound similar and people stumble across the same chord progressions all the time but only a small fraction of those songs ever get airplay (ie-my last post about The Dream). Also, Just probably wouldn't have lasted 10 years + in the music business if it was his style to just jacking people's stuff. Although he used to be a very sample-heavy producer in the late 90's, his music has changed a lot since then and he has evolved in the process. He arranges the tracks and also writes verses and hooks for many of the songs he's a part of these days so you gotta give him a lotta credit. And he's still one of my favourite producers.

Rant #2: "I don't know what kinda girls he rolls with, but if I offered a girl a tip like some dime-piece, I'd probably get slapped"
As far as that video clip goes, I'm not really impressed by his production skills. I'm quite certain that I've made a melody that sounds 90% the same as the first joint he made when I was messin around with my AKAI. But then again, I'm not the one that's made a living off of making music...so you be the judge.
Anyways, on to the R. Kelly part:
The way I see it, The Dream is like a modern-day R. Kelly, minus the pee pee fetish. There's a few things about him that just get to me:
First of all, I dunno what it is, but every time I hear a fat guy sing in a falsetto voice, something just doesn't seem right. It's like calling a phone sex line and hearing a woman with a sensual voice, only to find out that she's like 300lbs and lives in a trailer park. Guys like The Dream always remind of the episode of The Simpsons where Homer meets the chubby guy in the mental institute who thinks he's Michael Jackson...it's just...weird.... Of course, he later goes on to sing "Happy Birthday" to Lisa later on and is voiced by none other than MJ himself.
Now, we all know R. Kelly is notorious for putting extremely sexual/borderline inappropriate lyrics into his songs. Who can forget his song Sex In The Kitchen, where he literally screams out "Girl I'm ready to toss your salad!" (fast forward to about 1:00 in).
Oh hellllll noooooo....He ain't singing about no romaine lettuce. (For those of you that don't know what that means...go here). But, Kels sings it in his smooth R&B voice, and the song is a laid-back slow jam, so it's all good right? Wrong. Singing the words doesn't make the lyrics any better! And that's exactly why this verse from The Dream's Shawty is a 10 is just plain bad:
She Fine, Shawty Is A Dime
You Should Tip Her, You Should Tip Her
If She Good, And You Love Her
You Should Tip Her, You Should Tip Her
If She Fix You Eggs And Grits In The Morning
You Should Tip Her, You Should Tip Her
Pancakes With The Bacon On The Side
(You Should Tip Me, You Should Tip Me)
TIP her? I don't know what kinda girls he rolls with, but if I offered a girl a tip like some dime-piece, I'd probably get slapped. Show me a girl that would actually say that last line, and I'll show you a stripper. Granted, these words aren't nearly as vivid or nasty as Kels' verses, but it's the same idea. Singing in a falsetto voice don't make the words right.
Am I the only person that's noticed this shit is going on? Then again, these aren't the first instances where grimy-ass lyrics have been snuck into heavy rotation on the radio and club scene. Take for example, one of the biggest songs by Lil Jon ever...Get Low (refer to "skeet"). I especially like how the clean version of the song replaced "motherfucker" with 4 extra "skeets". That's even worse! I can't tell you how many girls I saw screaming out those words in the club. If you actually knew what that meant, you'd think twice about saying that, girl.
At the end of the day, I don't really care about profanity in songs anymore. I'm really immune to all of it these days and it'd take some really weird shit to get my attention (refer to "toss your salad") and with the state of hip hop right now, half the time I only listen to the production on the tracks...go figure. But if you're gonna talk or sing about some nasty shit, or shit that just doesn't make any sense, don't try to cover it up by putting it in an R&B song. That ain't what R&B's for, so leave that dirty talk to the Ying Yang Twins.
